Schools and Preschools: Admission-Season Auto Campaigns for Parents in the Catchment
Fact-checked by BrandOnAuto Campaign Operations · Manages installation and GPS verification across 20+ cities

Quick Answer
Schools and preschools suit auto rickshaw advertising because parents choose a school close to home and decide within a few weeks of admission season. Book a three-month hood campaign of 25 to 40 autos inside the school's 3 to 5 km catchment, starting four to six weeks before forms open, with the name, classes and locality on the hood.
Key Takeaways
- School choice is local: most day-school and preschool parents shortlist within a 3 to 5 km radius, which is the area a 25 to 40 auto fleet can cover every day.
- Admission season for nursery and Class 1 in most of North India runs from late November to March, with a second preschool window around the new academic year. Autos should be on the road four to six weeks before forms open.
- The hood carries the school name, the classes open for admission, the locality and one response line. Board affiliation goes on only if it is granted, and "best" or "number one" claims are out under the ASCI education guidelines.
- A 30-auto hood campaign for three months costs ₹52,200 in media plus about ₹7,500 to ₹12,000 in one-time printing, at ₹580 per auto per month.
- Measure with a campaign-only phone number, an enquiry-form question and a comparison of enquiries by pin code against last season.

Why Do Schools and Preschools Suit Auto Rickshaw Advertising?
A school is a neighbourhood decision. A parent will not send a four-year-old across the city, so the shortlist is built from the schools within a comfortable bus or auto ride of home. That makes the audience a defined set of streets, and streets are what autos cover.
Three things make the fit stronger than for most categories.
- The audience is on the road at the same time every day. School runs, creche drop-offs and the evening tuition circuit put parents on the same roads at 7 to 9 in the morning and 2 to 5 in the afternoon. In many Indian cities the auto rickshaw is itself the school transport for a large share of children, so parents stand at the gate watching autos arrive every single day.
- The decision is made by two adults over several weeks. A school name that both parents have seen on the road repeatedly is the one that gets typed into a search box and discussed at dinner. That repetition is the thing a hoarding at one junction cannot give.
- The product is the locality. "A good school near home" is what parents are searching for. A hood that says the school name and the locality answers that question before it is asked.
Our post on coaching institutes covers the tuition and test-prep side of education, which runs on a different calendar and speaks to older students. This guide is about K-12 schools, preschools and playschools, where the buyer is a parent and the child is under ten.
When Is School Admission Season?
The calendar differs by board, state and age group, so check your own city before fixing dates. The broad pattern across our 20+ cities looks like this.
| Window | Who is deciding | When autos should be on the road |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery and pre-primary admissions (Delhi and much of North India) | Parents of children aged 3 to 4 | From mid-November. In Delhi the Directorate of Education usually announces the private-school nursery schedule in late November with forms in December. |
| Class 1 and lateral admissions for an April academic year (CBSE and most North and West Indian boards) | Parents of children aged 5 to 7 and families moving house | December to February, with results and fee payment in March |
| Preschool and playschool year-round intake | Parents of children aged 2 to 4 | A second peak around the new academic year, April in the North and June in Maharashtra and the South, plus a smaller one after Diwali when families settle in new homes |
| Schools opening a new branch or a new section | Everyone in the new catchment | Six weeks before the first open day, inside a normal three-month booking |
Two practical points follow. First, book for three months that cover the run-up, the form window and the fee-payment fortnight. A fleet that goes live the week forms open has missed the weeks when shortlists were built. Second, a preschool is a two-season business and should think of autos as a November to February booking and a separate April to June or June to August booking, not one twelve-month contract. The National Education Policy's foundational stage covers ages 3 to 8, which is exactly the age band where parents compare preschools and primary sections most carefully.
How Many Autos Does a School Need?
Buy the catchment, not the city. A school's catchment is wherever its buses and school autos already go, and the bus route list is the best zone map a school owns.
- A single day school: 25 to 40 hood autos across two zones that together cover the 3 to 5 km around the gate, weighted towards the residential pockets the bus routes already serve.
- A preschool or playschool: 20 to 30 autos in one tight zone of 2 to 3 km. Nobody drives a three-year-old far.
- A chain with several preschool centres in a city: one zone of 20 to 25 autos per centre, each hood carrying its own centre's locality, rather than one thin city-wide fleet. Our franchise and multi-city guide explains how to coordinate the paperwork.
For the arithmetic behind those ranges, use our fleet-size planner. The useful rule is that an auto fleet is only visible when a resident sees the same hood several times a week, and that needs density in a small area rather than spread across a city. Our guide to zone targeting covers how to keep a fleet inside a catchment.
Ask the vendor for autos that stand near the school, the nearest market and the main residential gates in the morning. Drivers who start their day near a school gate spend a large part of it on the school run.
What Should a School Put on the Hood?
Parents read the hood from 30 metres in two or three seconds, so it carries one message. Our 30-metre design rule has the general rules. For a school, use this order.
- 1The school name, large. This is the thing that must be remembered.
- 2What is open. "Admissions open: Nursery to Class 5" or "Playgroup and Nursery, 2027 session". Say the classes, not "all classes".
- 3The locality. "Sector 12, near the water tank" is what turns recognition into a visit.
- 4One proof point that is true and permitted. "CBSE affiliated" if the affiliation has been granted, "Est. 2009" if it was, "AC buses on 14 routes" if they exist. Not "best school in the city", not "100 percent results" unless you can show the figure, and not a ranking from a magazine the parent has never heard of.
- 5One response line. A phone number that is only used on the hoods, or a QR to the admissions page. Our post on QR codes and phone numbers on transit ads explains placement.
Language matters more here than in most categories because the parent reading the hood may not be the parent who speaks English at home. In most of our cities the school name in English with the admission line in the local language reads best. Our guide to choosing the language for an auto ad covers the trade-offs.
What Do the Advertising Rules Say About School Ads?
Education is one of the categories the Advertising Standards Council of India watches closely. ASCI's guidelines for advertisements of educational institutions, updated in 2022, apply to schools and preschools as much as to coaching centres. The points that matter on a hood are these.
- No claim of being the best, the top or number one unless it is backed by verifiable, current evidence that the ad names.
- No affiliation, recognition or accreditation that has not actually been granted. "CBSE affiliation applied for" is not "CBSE affiliated".
- No results, pass percentages or placement claims that cannot be substantiated, and no fear-based copy that suggests a child will fall behind without the school.
- Nothing that misleads about fees, scholarships or "free" offers. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines on misleading advertisements apply here too.
What Does a School Admission Campaign Cost?
Media is charged per auto per month with a three-month minimum. Printing is one-time on top. Union charges are a separate line in metro cities.
| Format | Media rate per auto per month | 30 autos for 3 months |
|---|---|---|
| Hood branding | ₹580 | ₹52,200 |
| 24×18 inch sticker | ₹230 | ₹20,700 |
| 24×6 inch sticker | ₹140 | ₹12,600 |
Printing a hood costs about ₹250 to ₹400 per auto, once, so a 30-auto hood fleet adds roughly ₹7,500 to ₹12,000. At an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 daily impressions per hood auto, 30 autos deliver about 27 to 32 million impressions over 90 days, which works out to around ₹1.6 to ₹1.9 per thousand impressions on media. That sits inside the ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 CPM range in our cost guide.
Against the fees at stake the sums are small. A single day school charging ₹60,000 a year recovers the whole media cost from one admission, and a playschool at ₹30,000 a year from two. That is not a promise of a given number of admissions; it is the reason the budget decision is rarely the hard part.
For a preschool with one short message, the 24×18 inch sticker carries the name, the classes and the locality clearly. The hood is the better choice for a day school that needs to be seen from across a main road and wants the name to look established.

How Do You Measure Admissions From an Auto Campaign?
Schools have an advantage over most advertisers: every enquiry is logged with a child's name, an address and a phone number, so attribution is mostly a matter of asking.
- Add "How did you hear about us?" to the enquiry form and the front desk script, with "the autos" as a listed option. Train the admissions desk to ask every parent, not only the ones who mention it.
- Use a campaign-only phone number on the hoods. Calls to that number are auto response and nothing else.
- Compare enquiries by pin code during the campaign with the same weeks last season. The auto zones should rise more than the rest of the catchment.
- Watch open-day attendance from the auto zones. Open days are the moment a shortlist becomes a visit.
- Ask for proof of deployment. Photo verification and the registration list show the fleet was in the catchment on the days the forms were open. Our GPS tracking and photo verification guide covers what to request.
Report the comparison honestly. A good admission season has many causes, so present the auto zones against the non-auto zones as an indication of lift rather than proof.
What Goes Wrong in School Campaigns?
Across 5,000+ autos, 500+ brands and 20+ cities since 2020, the school and preschool campaigns that disappointed shared a short list of causes.
- Going live the week forms opened. The shortlist was already built. Start four to six weeks earlier.
- A hood that lists every facility. Smart classes, a swimming pool, robotics, a cafeteria and an AC bus, in eight-point type. Nobody reads it at 30 metres. One name, one admission line, one locality.
- A claim the board would not allow. "Number one school in the district" with no source is a complaint waiting to happen.
- Spreading 30 autos across a city. Ten autos a zone is invisible. Two dense zones are not.
- Stopping on the last day of forms. The fee-payment fortnight is when waitlisted parents decide. Keep the fleet through it.
Our post on common auto advertising mistakes has the general version of each.
How Does This Fit the Wider Picture?
India's auto rickshaw fleet runs into the millions of registered vehicles on MoRTH's Vahan data, and in most cities those vehicles are woven into the school day itself. The Pitch Madison Advertising Report has for years shown outdoor as a steady share of Indian ad spend, and Nielsen's out-of-home research finds that people remember messages they pass repeatedly on routine journeys. Few journeys are more routine than the school run, and few decisions are more local than where a child will study.
The schools we see do best on autos treat the medium as a three-month catchment campaign that starts before the shortlist is built, with a name, an admission line and a locality that any parent can read from the gate.
A parent does not pick a school because of an auto. They pick the school whose name they already know on the morning they sit down to fill the forms.
Planning an admission-season fleet?
Tell us the school's location, the classes opening and when forms open. We will map the catchment from your bus routes, suggest the fleet size and send a line-itemed quote within 24 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should a school start its auto campaign for admissions?
Four to six weeks before admission forms open, so the fleet is fully installed before parents start shortlisting. For nursery admissions in Delhi and much of North India that means autos on the road from mid-November; for an April academic year Class 1 intake, from December. Keep the fleet through the fee-payment fortnight.
How many autos does a preschool need?
Usually 20 to 30 hood or 24×18 inch sticker autos in one tight zone of 2 to 3 km around the centre. A chain should book a zone of 20 to 25 autos per centre, each hood carrying its own centre's locality.
Can a school print "CBSE affiliated" on an auto hood?
Only if the affiliation has been granted. ASCI's education guidelines treat an affiliation, recognition or accreditation that has not actually been received as misleading, and "applied for" is not "affiliated".
What does a 30-auto school campaign cost?
₹52,200 in media for three months of hood branding at ₹580 per auto per month, plus about ₹7,500 to ₹12,000 in one-time printing and metro union charges where they apply.
How do we know the autos brought admissions?
Ask "how did you hear about us" on the enquiry form and at the desk, use a campaign-only phone number on the hoods, and compare enquiries by pin code with the same weeks last season.
