Quick Answer

Quick commerce suits auto rickshaw advertising because a dark store can only sell to the homes inside its delivery radius, usually 2 to 3 km, and autos work the same few kilometres every day. Put 15 to 25 hood autos inside each store's serviceable area for three months from launch week, with one offer code per store.

Key Takeaways

  • A dark store's market is a map: the 2 to 3 km of homes it can reach in its promised time. Advertising outside that area only produces "not serviceable in your area" screens.
  • Three kinds of advertiser use the same logic: quick-commerce platforms opening a dark store, brands that sell through those apps, and local shops that deliver by phone or WhatsApp.
  • Plan 15 to 25 hood autos per dark store, chosen from stands inside the serviceable area, and ask for GPS data on how much of each day the fleet spends inside it.
  • A 20-auto hood campaign for three months costs ₹34,800 in media plus about ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 in one-time printing, at ₹580 per auto per month.
  • Measure with a store-specific first-order code and by comparing new customers in the auto zones against similar dark stores without autos.

Why Does Quick Commerce Suit Auto Rickshaw Advertising?

Most media is bought by city. Quick commerce is not sold by city. It is sold by dark store, and each dark store serves a small area of streets drawn around how far a rider can get in the promised time. Someone two kilometres outside that line is not a customer, however well they remember the ad.

Autos match that shape better than most outdoor formats for three reasons.

  • They stay local. Most city autos work a familiar patch around their stand, the nearest market and the main roads in between. Pick autos whose stands are inside the serviceable area and the fleet spends much of its day there. They do leave it, so plan for some spill and check the GPS data.
  • They repeat. A household sees the same hood in its lane, at the market and at the society gate several times a week. Quick commerce is a habit purchase, and habits are built on repetition, not on one big impression.
  • They reach the people who order. The milk, bread and vegetable run is the first thing quick commerce replaces. The people who make that run are on foot or in autos in their own neighbourhood every morning and evening.

How Many Autos Does One Dark Store Need?

Buy the serviceable area, not the city. A 3 km radius covers roughly 28 square kilometres, and in a dense Indian neighbourhood that is a lot of households for a small fleet to keep seeing.

  • One dark store in a dense area: 15 to 25 hood autos, drawn from stands inside the serviceable area and spread across its main residential pockets.
  • A platform opening several dark stores in one city: one zone of 12 to 20 autos per store, each hood carrying its own locality, rather than one thin city-wide fleet. Eight stores at 15 autos each is 120 autos.
  • A local shop delivering within 2 km: 10 to 15 autos with the 24×18 inch sticker, which carries a name and a phone number clearly.

For the arithmetic behind these ranges, use our fleet-size planner, and our guide to zone targeting covers how to draw zones that respect rivers, railway lines and flyovers. A dark store's real boundary is often one of those barriers, not a neat circle.

When Should the Autos Go Live?

The best moment is the week a dark store starts taking orders in a new area. That is when the message "we now deliver here" is true for the first time and nobody in the area has the habit yet. After launch, three more moments matter.

  • When the serviceable area grows. A store that adds pin codes has a new audience that has never been told.
  • Before festival weeks. Orders for sweets, puja items, gifts and party supplies rise around Diwali and other regional festivals. Our festival season planner has the booking lead times.
  • When a competitor opens nearby. In areas served by several apps, the familiar name gets the habit.

Book a three-month minimum. The first month builds familiarity, and first orders usually follow from repeated sightings, not the first one.

What Should Go on the Hood?

People read a hood from 30 metres in two or three seconds. Our 30-metre design rule has the general rules. For a dark store, use this order.

  1. 1The name, large. The app name or the shop name, exactly as it appears on the phone.
  2. 2The local line. "Now delivering in Indiranagar" turns a city-wide brand into a neighbourhood service.
  3. 3One offer. A first-order code that is unique to this dark store. It is the cheapest attribution tool you will ever buy.
  4. 4One response path. For an app, the code is enough. For a local shop, a phone or WhatsApp number in large type. Our post on QR codes and phone numbers on transit ads explains why QR codes rarely get scanned on a moving auto.

What Does a Dark Store Campaign Cost?

Media is charged per auto per month with a three-month minimum. Printing is one-time on top, and union charges are a separate line in metro cities.

Media cost for a 20-auto dark store campaign over three months
FormatMedia rate per auto per month20 autos for 3 months
Hood branding₹580₹34,800
24×18 inch sticker₹230₹13,800
24×6 inch sticker₹140₹8,400

Printing a hood costs about ₹250 to ₹400 per auto, once, so a 20-auto hood fleet adds roughly ₹5,000 to ₹8,000. At an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 daily impressions per hood auto, 20 autos deliver about 18 to 22 million impressions over 90 days, which works out to around ₹1.6 to ₹1.9 per thousand impressions on media. That sits inside the ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 CPM range in our cost guide.

A platform opening eight dark stores in a city at 15 hood autos each would book 120 autos, or ₹2,08,800 in media for three months. The same 120 autos with 24×18 inch stickers would be ₹82,800.

How Do You Measure Orders From an Auto Campaign?

Quick commerce has an advantage over most advertisers: every order carries an address, so the data to measure a zone already exists.

  • Use a first-order code per dark store on the hoods and nowhere else. Redemptions of that code are auto response.
  • Compare new customers by dark store. Set the auto stores against similar stores without autos over the same weeks. The gap is your indication of lift.
  • For brands on the apps, compare sales in the auto zones with other zones where your platform reporting gives store-level or pin-code-level figures.
  • For local shops, count calls and WhatsApp messages to a number used only on the autos.
  • Ask for proof of deployment. Photos, the registration list and GPS heatmaps show the fleet was inside the serviceable area. Our GPS tracking and photo verification guide covers what to request.

Report the comparison honestly. A new dark store grows for many reasons, so present the auto zones against the others as an indication, not proof.

What Goes Wrong in Quick-Commerce Campaigns?

Across 5,000+ autos, 500+ brands and 20+ cities since 2020, the hyperlocal campaigns that disappointed shared a short list of causes.

  • Advertising beyond the serviceable area. Every reader who opens the app and sees "not serviceable" is a lost customer and a small bad memory of the brand.
  • One city-wide fleet for many stores. Ten autos a zone is invisible. Fewer zones, denser fleets.
  • Going live before the store can deliver. The first order has to work. Start the autos when the store is stable, not on a press-release date.
  • A shared code across all stores. You lose the only clean attribution you had.
  • A promise the store cannot keep at peak hours. See the delivery-time note above.

Our post on common auto advertising mistakes has the general version of each.

How Does This Fit the Wider Picture?

India's auto rickshaw fleet runs into the millions of registered vehicles on MoRTH's Vahan data, and autos remain a familiar short-trip vehicle in most Indian neighbourhoods. The Pitch Madison Advertising Report has for years shown outdoor as a steady share of Indian ad spend while digital grows, and Nielsen's out-of-home research finds that people remember messages they pass repeatedly on routine journeys. Quick commerce is built on routine. The brand a household orders milk from at 7 am is usually the one it already knew.

A dark store does not need the whole city to know its name. It needs the homes it can actually reach to see it every day for three months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many autos does a dark store need?

Usually 15 to 25 hood autos inside the store's 2 to 3 km serviceable area, chosen from stands inside it. A platform opening several stores should book a separate zone of 12 to 20 autos per store, each hood carrying its own locality.

Can a brand put a quick-commerce app's name on its auto hood?

Only with the platform's written approval, because app names and logos are trademarks. A generic line such as "order it in your delivery app" needs no permission.

Can the hood say "10-minute delivery"?

Only if it is true for the people who read it, including at peak hours. The CCPA 2022 guidelines on misleading advertisements and the ASCI code apply. "Fast delivery in [locality]" is safer.

What does a 20-auto dark store campaign cost?

₹34,800 in media for three months of hood branding at ₹580 per auto per month, plus about ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 in one-time printing and metro union charges where they apply.

How do we know the autos brought orders?

Use a first-order code unique to each dark store on the hoods only, and compare new customers at stores with autos against similar stores without them over the same weeks.
