Quick Answer

Auto rickshaw ads suit PGs, hostels and co-living spaces because their tenants are newcomers who arrive by train or bus, take autos from the station and pick a room near their college or office. Run 10 to 20 autos for three months around the campus or IT park and the arrival points, timed to admissions and joining season.

Key Takeaways

  • PG and co-living demand is local and seasonal. Students arrive around admissions and the start of term; freshers arrive in the months when campus hires join. Most look for a room within a short commute of where they study or work.
  • Book the zone between the arrival points (railway station, bus stand) and the destination (college gate, IT park), plus the main roads around the property.
  • The hood carries who it is for, the area, one honest line on what the rent includes and a WhatsApp number. Say "from ₹X a month" only if a real room is available at that price.
  • A 15-auto hood campaign for three months costs ₹26,100 in media plus about ₹3,750 to ₹6,000 in one-time printing, at ₹580 per auto per month.
  • Measure enquiries, property visits and move-ins by source, and judge the campaign on cost per bed filled.

Why Do Autos Work for PGs, Hostels and Co-Living?

A student from another state or a fresher joining an IT company does not know the city. They arrive at a railway station or a bus stand, and many of them take an auto to the campus, the office or a relative's place on their first day. For the next few weeks they move around the same small area while they look for a room. That makes accommodation a local, repeated-exposure problem, which is what autos do well.

  • They meet the tenant on arrival. An auto from the station to the college gate is often the first ride a newcomer takes. A hood that says "PG for students, 5 minutes from campus" is relevant at exactly that moment.
  • They repeat in a small area. A tenant's search radius is usually a few kilometres. A fleet chosen from stands in that radius is seen many times in the weeks when the decision is made.
  • Drivers know the area. Newcomers often ask the auto driver where to stay. A driver carrying your hood knows your property name and can point the way.

Our post on how auto rickshaw advertising works explains how fleets are picked from stands, and our zone targeting guide covers how to draw a catchment.

Which Accommodation Businesses Suit Auto Ads?

Accommodation businesses that suit auto ads, who the tenant is and where the autos should run
BusinessWho the tenant isWhere the autos should run
Student PGs and private hostelsCollege and coaching students, often from other citiesCollege gates, coaching hubs, railway station and bus stand
Working professionals' PGsFreshers and young employeesIT parks, tech corridors and the residential pockets around them
Co-living brands with several propertiesStudents and young professionalsOne zone per property cluster, not one city-wide fleet
Women's PGs and hostelsStudents and working womenWomen's colleges, IT parks, hospitals with nursing staff
Short-stay hostelsInterns, trainees, exam candidatesRailway station, bus stand, training institutes

Coaching towns and education hubs are a special case. Our guide to auto ads for coaching institutes covers those audiences; a PG near a coaching cluster can run on the same stands.

Where Should the Autos Run?

Buy the tenant's first weeks in the city, not the whole city.

  • Arrival points: the main railway station and the inter-state bus stand, especially on the routes that lead towards the college or IT park.
  • The destination: the college gate, the coaching street or the IT park entrance, where students and employees take autos every day.
  • The property's own roads: the streets around the PG, so that a tenant who has seen the hood elsewhere recognises the building when they walk past.

In Bengaluru that might mean Majestic and the Electronic City or Whitefield corridors; in Pune, Hinjewadi and the station; in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and HITEC City. Our city pages for Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad list the areas we cover. For one property, 10 to 20 autos across two zones is a sensible start. The fleet-size planner has the arithmetic.

What Should a PG or Co-Living Ad Say?

People read a hood from 30 metres in two or three seconds, so follow our 30-metre design rule and use this order.

  1. 1Who it is for, large. "PG for students", "Ladies hostel" or "Co-living for professionals". This is what makes the right person look.
  2. 2The area or the landmark. "Near [college] gate" or "5 min from [IT park]". Distance is the first question every tenant asks.
  3. 3One honest line on what is included. "Meals included", "Wi-Fi and housekeeping" or "Single and sharing rooms", whichever is true.
  4. 4One response path. A WhatsApp number in large type. Most tenants want photos and a price before they visit. A QR code is a poor choice on a moving auto; our post on QR codes and phone numbers explains why.

Write in the language your tenants read. For students from other states, English or Hindi often works better than the local language; for local students the reverse may be true. Our guide to choosing the language for an auto ad covers the trade-offs.

When Should the Campaign Run?

  • Admission and new term. Student demand peaks in the weeks around college admissions and the start of term, which for many colleges falls between June and August. Check the academic calendar of the colleges near you; it varies by state and university.
  • Joining season for freshers. IT and corporate freshers often join in batches in the second half of the year. Ask the HR teams near you, or look at when the big campuses run induction.
  • Exam and coaching cycles. Coaching hubs fill before each batch start, which differs by course.

Book the autos so they are live two to four weeks before the arrival wave and keep them running through it. A three-month minimum covers the peak and the late arrivals who move after their first temporary stay.

What Does a PG or Co-Living Campaign Cost?

Media is charged per auto per month with a three-month minimum. Printing is one-time on top, and union charges are a separate line in metro cities.

Media cost for a 15-auto PG or co-living campaign over three months
FormatMedia rate per auto per month15 autos for 3 months
Hood branding₹580₹26,100
24×18 inch sticker₹230₹10,350
24×6 inch sticker₹140₹6,300

Printing a hood costs about ₹250 to ₹400 per auto, once, so a 15-auto hood fleet adds roughly ₹3,750 to ₹6,000. At an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 daily impressions per hood auto, 15 autos deliver about 13.5 to 16 million impressions over 90 days, which works out to around ₹1.6 to ₹1.9 per thousand impressions on media. That sits inside the ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 CPM range in our cost guide.

The hood suits a co-living brand that wants to look established across a corridor. The 24×18 inch sticker carries who it is for, the area and a number clearly and suits a single PG on a smaller budget.

The number that matters is cost per bed filled. Divide the full campaign cost by the tenants who came through the auto number and moved in, and compare it with what you pay a listing site or a broker for the same beds. A tenant usually stays for months, so one filled bed covers a good share of a small campaign.

How Do You Measure Move-Ins From an Auto Campaign?

  • Use a WhatsApp number that appears only on the autos. Every message to it is an auto enquiry.
  • Ask every visitor where they heard about you, with "auto" as a listed option on the visit form.
  • Track the funnel by source: enquiries, visits, bookings and move-ins.
  • Reply fast. A newcomer messages five PGs in an evening and visits the two who reply first with photos and a price.
  • Ask for proof of deployment. Photos, the registration list and GPS data show the fleet ran in your zone. Our GPS tracking and photo verification guide covers what to request.

Report results honestly. Occupancy depends on price, location, reviews and the season as much as on advertising, so treat the auto numbers as one source among several.

What Goes Wrong in Accommodation Campaigns?

Across 5,000+ autos, 500+ brands and 20+ cities since 2020, the campaigns that disappointed shared a few causes.

  • A hood that does not say who it is for. A brand name alone reads as an unknown company.
  • The fleet in the wrong place. Autos across the whole city instead of the station-to-campus routes.
  • Booking after the wave. Autos that go live after term has started miss most of the demand.
  • A "from" price that is never available. Enquiries rise, then visitors leave annoyed.
  • A number that nobody answers in the evening, when newcomers do their searching.

Our post on common auto advertising mistakes has the general version of each.

How Does This Fit the Wider Picture?

India's auto rickshaw fleet runs into the millions of registered vehicles on MoRTH's Vahan data, and autos remain one of the main last-mile rides from stations and bus stands. The Pitch Madison Advertising Report has for years shown outdoor as a steady share of Indian ad spend, and Nielsen's out-of-home research finds that people remember messages they pass repeatedly on routine journeys. For a PG or co-living space, the routine journey that matters is a newcomer's first few weeks between the station, the campus and the streets around it.

A newcomer picks a room in their first few weeks in the city. The PG that wins is usually the one whose name they already saw on the ride from the station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do auto rickshaw ads work for PGs and hostels?

Yes, when the fleet runs where newcomers arrive and where they study or work. Tenants choose rooms within a short commute, and autos repeat a property name and number in that small area during the weeks they are searching.

How many autos does a PG campaign need?

For one property, 10 to 20 autos across two zones: the arrival points and the area around the college or IT park. A co-living brand with several properties should book a zone per cluster.

When should a student PG advertise?

Two to four weeks before admissions and the start of term, which for many colleges falls between June and August, and through the first weeks of term. Check the calendar of the colleges near you.

Can we advertise "rooms from ₹6,000"?

Only if real rooms are available at that price with what it includes stated clearly. The CCPA 2022 guidelines on misleading advertisements and the ASCI code apply to "from" prices.

What does a 15-auto campaign cost?

₹26,100 in media for three months of hood branding at ₹580 per auto per month, plus about ₹3,750 to ₹6,000 in one-time printing and metro union charges where they apply.
