Quick Answer

CNG autos suit zone and citywide campaigns: they cover more ground, have a standard hood and run on a known rate card (hood ₹580 per auto a month). E-rickshaws suit tight last-mile catchments around stations and markets, mostly in north and east India. They move slowly on short fixed routes, and panel sizes vary by maker.

Key Takeaways

  • An e-rickshaw is a different vehicle in law, not just a quieter auto. Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules it is a battery vehicle for last-mile trips, limited to 25 km/h and four passengers, and that shapes how its ad travels.
  • CNG autos roam. They take passengers point to point across a city, so a fleet spreads an ad across a whole zone and beyond.
  • E-rickshaws loop. Most run shared, fixed routes of a few kilometres from a metro station, bus stand or market, so the same ad passes the same people many times a day.
  • The surfaces differ. A CNG auto has a standard rear hood and side panels with known dielines. E-rickshaw canopies and back panels differ by manufacturer, so artwork has to be checked vehicle by vehicle.
  • Electric autos of the regular L5 type are a third case: they share the CNG auto body, so hood ads work on them the same way.
  • Choose by where your customers are. Zone or city reach points to CNG autos. One station, one market or one small town where e-rickshaws dominate can point to e-rickshaws.

What Is the Difference Between an E-Rickshaw and a CNG Auto?

Most people use "auto" for both, but Indian law separates them. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2015 brought e-rickshaws formally under the Motor Vehicles Act, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules define an e-rickshaw as a battery-operated three-wheeler for last-mile passenger transport. It may carry no more than four passengers plus the driver and 40 kg of luggage, its motor is capped at 2,000 W, and its top speed is 25 km/h.

A CNG auto is a regular three-wheeler passenger vehicle, the green-and-yellow or black-and-yellow auto of Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. It has a full engine, runs at normal city traffic speeds and is licensed to carry passengers point to point. Delhi's autos moved to CNG after the Supreme Court's clean-fuel orders around the turn of the century, and many other cities followed. Some cities run petrol or LPG autos, and newer electric autos of the same L5 class are growing. For an advertiser, those count as the same medium as a CNG auto because the body and the hood are the same.

The difference that matters for advertising is not the fuel. It is how far and how fast the vehicle moves, what route it follows, and what surface it offers.

The table is the short version. The sections below explain what each row means when you are planning a campaign.

Why Do Speed and Route Pattern Matter So Much?

A CNG auto does not have a route. It goes wherever the passenger wants. In a day it might start in a residential colony, go to a railway station, cross to a market, and end near an office cluster. That is why we plan CNG campaigns by zone: a group of 25 to 40 hood autos based at the auto stands of one 3 to 5 sq km pocket will cover that pocket densely and carry the ad out of it as well. Our fleet-size planner explains that zone density in full.

An e-rickshaw usually works the other way. In most towns e-rickshaws run shared routes: from the metro station to a colony gate, from the bus stand to the main market, from the railway station to the hospital. The driver waits until the seats fill, runs the loop, and comes back. At 25 km/h or less, through crowded lanes, the vehicle is slow and close to pedestrians.

That gives each medium a clear character:

  1. 1CNG autos give reach. An ad on a CNG auto meets many different people across a wide area. It suits brands that need a whole zone or a whole city to know their name.
  2. 2E-rickshaws give frequency in one place. An ad on an e-rickshaw meets the same commuters, shopkeepers and residents again and again along one corridor. It suits a business whose customers all pass the same few streets.

What Ad Surfaces Does Each Vehicle Offer?

On a CNG auto the formats are standard. The rear hood is the large, high-visibility panel that traffic behind the auto reads at a signal; the 24×18 inch and 24×6 inch stickers go on the sides and back. Because the body is the same across a city's fleet, one piece of artwork fits every vehicle. Our auto hood branding page shows the formats, and the creative checklist covers dielines and bleed.

On an e-rickshaw the usable surfaces are usually the rear panel or back flap and the sides of the canopy. Many e-rickshaws are assembled by smaller local manufacturers, so panel sizes and materials vary from one model to the next, sometimes within one route. Canopy flaps are often fabric or soft sheet that moves and creases. That has three practical effects:

  • You may need two or three artwork sizes for one campaign.
  • Prints need to suit a flexible surface, not a rigid panel. Our guide to rexin, vinyl and eco-solvent materials explains the trade-offs.
  • Photo verification matters more, because a creased or folded flap can hide half the message.

Where Does Each Type of Vehicle Dominate?

This is often the deciding factor, because you can only advertise on vehicles that actually run where your customers are.

CNG and other fuel autos dominate the big metros and most large cities: Mumbai and Thane, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and the arterial roads of Delhi. These are the cities in our network, and they are where our rate card applies.

E-rickshaws have spread fastest in the north and east. MoRTH's Vahan dashboard shows e-rickshaws among the largest groups of electric vehicle registrations, concentrated in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, West Bengal and Assam. In many smaller towns there they have replaced cycle rickshaws as the main short-trip transport. In Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Kanpur and Patna you will see both: CNG autos on the main roads and e-rickshaws on the feeder routes into colonies and markets. Our city pages for Lucknow and Patna describe how the auto network works there.

Which Should You Choose for Your Campaign?

Start from your customer, not the vehicle.

A worked example of the cost side: a clinic that wants one zone covered with 30 CNG hood autos pays 30 × ₹580 = ₹17,400 a month in media, plus one-time printing. Metro cities add union charges. The full breakdown is in our cost guide. We cannot give a like-for-like e-rickshaw figure because e-rickshaw ads are usually arranged route by route with local owners and associations, and prices vary a lot between towns.

What Should You Check Before Booking E-Rickshaw Ads?

If you decide e-rickshaws suit you, whether through us or a local operator, check these points before you pay:

  • Registration. E-rickshaws must be registered under the 2015 amendment, but many towns still have unregistered vehicles. Ask that your ads go only on registered e-rickshaws with visible number plates, so photo proof can be tied to a real vehicle.
  • Route list. Ask which routes the vehicles run, and check that the routes actually pass your customers.
  • Panel sizes. Get the exact dimensions of each model before printing.
  • Proof. Insist on dated photos of every vehicle, as explained in our guide to GPS tracking and photo verification.
  • Local rules. Some municipal bodies and traffic police set their own conditions on e-rickshaw routes and on advertising on vehicles. Ask the operator which permissions they hold.

How Does This Fit the Wider Outdoor Picture?

The Pitch Madison Advertising Report has for years shown outdoor holding a steady share of Indian ad spend, and Nielsen's out-of-home research has consistently found that outdoor ads are noticed by many of the people who pass them. Neither breaks out e-rickshaws as a separate medium, so treat any e-rickshaw benchmark with care and ask how it was measured.

What Does This Mean for BrandOnAuto Clients?

We have run 5,000+ autos for 500+ brands across 20+ cities since 2020, and that network is CNG, petrol and LPG autos plus the electric autos of the same body type. Our rate card, our impression figures and our installation process are built for those vehicles. We are honest about that line: if your customers are mainly reached by e-rickshaws in a town where we do not run autos, we will tell you so before you spend anything. Where both run, as in Delhi NCR, the most efficient plan is usually CNG autos for the zone and a check on whether the last-mile e-rickshaw routes add anything your zone does not already cover.

Pick the vehicle your customers already ride past. Fuel type matters far less than where the vehicle goes all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you advertise on e-rickshaws in India?

Yes. E-rickshaw backs and canopies carry ads in many towns, usually arranged route by route with owners or local associations. Check registration, route lists and panel sizes before paying.

Are e-rickshaw ads cheaper than CNG auto ads?

Often per vehicle, but each e-rickshaw covers a much smaller area. Compare the cost of covering your customers' streets, not the cost per vehicle.

Do electric autos work the same as CNG autos for ads?

Yes. Electric autos of the regular three-wheeler L5 type share the CNG auto body, so hood and sticker formats fit them in the same way.

Which cities have the most e-rickshaws?

They are concentrated in north and east India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi NCR, West Bengal and Assam, according to Vahan registration data.

Does BrandOnAuto run e-rickshaw campaigns?

Our network and rate card cover CNG, petrol, LPG and electric autos. Tell us your target area and we will say honestly what we can and cannot cover there.
